Fanboy Fave and Phony Reformer Lessig Out

Fake intellectual property law "reformer" and fanboy favorite Larry Lessig has chickened out of running for Tom Lantos' old House seat (CA 12). Lessig announced his non-candidacy in one of his signature long, tedious, virtually unwatchable, and curiously low-tech videos.

Lessig purports to advocate some sort of anti-copyright "free culture," dedicated to egalitarian and democratic access to knowledge and information, while at the same time drawing a six figure income from a private, closed to the public, billion dollar endowment, elitist university (Stanford), that could serve as the epitome for a class-based monopoly on learning and knowledge.

For more of Lessig's hypocricy, see here:

Lessig claimed that he wanted to run for Congress because of his opposition to PACs and "corruption" in politics. Now that he has cancelled his bid, however, he will not be refunding his donors' campaign contributions. Instead, without a trace of shame (or even appreciation of the irony of it), Lessig has announced that "all [of the money] will go to (the yet to be established) Change Congress organization." Whenever Lessig gets around to "establishing" this august body, please do not be surprized to learn that it is in fact a PAC, with either Lessig, or one of his toadies, in charge. In other words, Mr. Reform is going to take the money donated to his campaign to "clean up Congress" and use it instead to establish his own personal slush fund. Nice.

I'll thank God for him just as soon as the Stanford Law School allows everyone to attend his lectures, get course credit, and graduate with a degree, for free.

While I can rail against fatcat elitist universities sitting on huge endowments with the best of them -- and I do so to myself every month when I pay my fealty to SallieMae --

Standford is on the path to exempting itself from such rants.

Credit where credit is due.

That little crumb that Stanford has allowed to fall off its table is not even close to the "open sourcing" that Mr. Lessig demands from other "content producers." Nice try though.

So nice to see someone who calls out Lessig for who he really is.  Everything he does is aimed at one goal: the glorification of Prof. Lawrence Lessig.

Re: Fanboy Fave and Phony Reformer Lessig Out (none / 0)

This is nonsense, i dont know what these caterwalling twits are blowing their horns for, but nothing these people say ever make sense.

Lessig is a mighty mighty thinker and founder of EFF.ORG. google Lawrence Lessig and find out yourself. His has fought for example against stupid stupid Intellectual property laws and in favor of fair use (which means you can copy your cds to protect them for example, something the record industry calls theft.)

If you are the kind of person who thinks the RIAA should be suing music fans -then stay away from Lessig.

He has decided to move from those issues, to corruption. He will be fighting to get rid of corruption now. Watch for efforts to get the money out of Washington, you know like lobbyists and political hacks.

And hacks trying to make their agenda seem progressive by talking about the school someone works for.

Re: Fanboy Fave and Phony Reformer Lessig Out (none / 0)

Thanks for addressing none of the points I made in the diary. We all know about Lessig's reputation. The point here was to present another perspective.

You talk about corruption in Washington. You talk about getting "the money out." Then why is Lessig holding on to the money that was given him in good faith for his would-be congressional campaign? From what I can gather, it was only at the last minute that a notice was put up at Act Blue saying the donations wouldn't be returned if he decided not to run. And turning the money over to an organization that has yet to be "established" does not exactly smack of transparency, does it? Lessig is creating his own PAC, his own slush fund. So much for "fighting to get rid of corruption."

As for the school Lessig works for, why don't you address the argument that the fortune Lessig has amassed by working for Stanford makes a hypocritical mockery of his claims to support a "free culture," instead of just flinging insults at me.

Re: Fanboy Fave and Phony Reformer Lessig Out (none / 0)

Made a fortune working at Stanford. A fortune. Working at Stanford. Nobody makes a fortune working at Stanford. A lot more than me, but not a "fortune."

Charles Barkley once said, I get paid a lot of money, my checks are big, I'm rich. The guy who signs my check, he's wealthy.

Sounds like the same argument as Edwards can't be for the ordinary working guy, cause his house is to big. It's not a real argument its slander by anecdote.

Lessig said as he announced his intention to try and run, that money donated would be transferred to the organization he was founding. It was upfront.

So you are trying to spread crap and see if something sticks. I still wonder what your real objection is. Dp you work in the music business?

Re: Fanboy Fave and Phony Reformer Lessig Out (none / 0)

Stanford represents the very type of monopoly on learning and knowledge that Lessig purports to oppose. But, this particular monopoly feathers his particular nest, so I guess he thinks it's OK. That's the point, not your irrelevant quibble about the definition of a "fortune," nor even less what Charles Barkley "once said."

And, apparently, Lessig was NOT upfront about where the money would go if he didn't run. The notice to that effect was put on Act Blue sometime after he announced his "exploratory committee" and asked for donations. In any event, Lessig denounced PACs and refused to take any PAC money. But now he is forming his own PAC. You don't see any problem there?

And stop poisoning the well. No, I don't work for the music business. This has nothing to do with music. I never even once mentioned it. Believe it or not, there are people in the world who don't think the world revolves around the issues of music downloads and the like.

Re: Fanboy Fave and Phony Reformer Lessig Out (none / 0)

Dont listen in here there is nothing progressive in this diary. Google Lawrence Lessig, visit eff.org, visit http://creativecommons.org and read any of the many books.

The fact that Lessig has been suggested for AG and SCOTUS, the fact he is one of the leading thinkers in the internet and internet freedom, the leading thinker in internet neutrality. Larry Lessig is it. The people who hate him are, the record industry, Microsoft (Lessig was lead counsel for a time when it was sued  by States for monopoly) and patent trolls. use google to search slashdot.org for very well researched talk about the subjects Lessig is an expert in, who all cite Lessig.

This isn't just trashing him because he endorsed Obama is it?

Do you have any substantial point explaining your anger and animus?
